Dreamed in Marseille — and Why That Isn't the Point

Marseille's modernist high-rise housing blocks at dusk, header for MoBe's Marseille origin story.

Every brand from a city with a reputation eventually gets asked to explain the connection. Here's ours, told straight: Marseille is where MoBe started, and that is most of what it is.

Quick answer: MoBe is an art print label founded in Marseille, France. The city is where the company started, not the thing it sells: the point of view comes from what MoBe chooses to publish and what it refuses, not from the place it was registered in.

What the city actually gave us

Marseille is a port before it's a postcard — loud, sun-bleached, unbothered by what you think of it. Living somewhere like that does teach you something: people here don't perform taste, they have it or they don't. But an address is not an aesthetic. Plenty of brands are founded in interesting cities and make dull work, and plenty of good work comes out of nowhere in particular.

Where the point of view actually comes from

MoBe is a brand before it's a catalog — a label that curates emerging visual culture and releases it as collectible prints, with a point of view. That point of view comes from what we choose and what we turn down: we don't print whatever sells, we choose slowly, and we put our name on it. You could read the whole of it off the catalog without ever knowing where we file our paperwork — which is rather the test.

Why we say it at all

Because it's true, and because an origin is worth stating once rather than implied forever. We're a small label from Marseille. What we'd rather be judged on is the work — chosen, made well, and worth living beside. That's the part we control.

Marseille taught us that much: go against the current, keep the edges, let the work do the talking while we hold the space.
